Historic Sandown coming up in November

RETURN TO THE THUNDER.

There was a time in Australian motor sport when sports cars were the fastest and most spectacular cars on our circuits, even quicker than our top open wheelers. Since the 1960s and ‘70s their popularity has waned, especially with the focus shifting to V8 touring cars.

That’s all about to change. The 2015 Historic Sandown meeting will feature the ‘big banger’ sports cars of yesteryear – a Return of the Thunder to the popular Melbourne circuit.

More than 40 events over two days will be run, with four hundred racing sports and touring cars including ‘big banger’ sports cars and F5000’s.

There will be special tributes to two motor racing icons – the late Lex Davidson and the great Australian driver and constructor, recently deceased Frank Matich. Fifty years after Lex Davison’s death at Sandown, his memory will live on when a Group M event for sports cars and open wheel racing cars of that era will be held – a fitting tribute to a true legend of Australian motor sport.

In 1970 Matich won both the Australian and the New Zealand Grands Prix in his McLaren Repco, and in 1971 he tasted victory in the Australian Grand Prix at Warwick Farm in a car of his own design – the Matich A50 Repco. At Historic Sandown, the Matich legacy will be celebrated with the appearance of the all-conquering Matich SR4.

Come along and meet Vern Schuppan, 1983 Le Mans winner, and other legends of the sport.

Hundreds of classic cars will be on display for all to admire.
