Geelong
Speed Trials - 50th year celebrations!
Sunday
19th November, 2006 - Eastern Beach, Waterfront Geelong
The Geelong Speed
Trials was formed in 1956, and has since become an event that is recognised
world-wide. Hence, 2006 was to be the 50th celebration, although at
the event on Sunday 19th November to mark this occasion there was
something missing – the main ingredient…
On track action.
In recent year’s there have
being continued problems with the local council as to a number of
issues with the staging of the event. Suffice to say that annually
it attracts crowds of 30,000 who come to watch the cars competing
in this serene location. This year the organising committee made a
conscious decision that a celebration had to be made on a large scale,
even if the traditional Speed Trials could not be held.
The grassed area at Eastern Beach
adjacent to the start line of Ritchie Boulevard (the unique sprint
circuit) was jam-packed with cars and motorcycles from all era’s,
which in all represented a true cross-section of the traditional Speed
Trials events. The day was about celbrating the 50thas well as displaying
a show of interest to the Geelong community of the event.
The Concours was held for a range
of classes, which eventually saw the magnificent Irving Vincent win
overall in the motorcycles, and an Austin Healey 3000 narrowly claiming
a hard fought car section.
Well over 200 cars and around 50 bikes graced the lawns of Eastern
Park under skies that cleared during the day to make it the perfect
setting for the wonderful celebration.
The outcome is hoped that the
Organising Committee will now continue discussions with local bodies
as to a long-term agreement to have the event back to its traditional
running in November 2007 and beyond.
